Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the responsibility we assume for the impact of our decisions and activities on society and the environment. At Borouge, our CSR activities reflect our mission, vision, values and our strategy. The success of Borouge is founded on the skills, creativity and dedication of our employees. As a company that operates globally, we are proud to recruit talent from diverse cultural backgrounds with a special focus on training and developing our people.

At Borouge, we know that engaging with and investing in the community is beneficial for our growth and sustainable development and we have a proud history of supporting our local communities and fostering long-term and mutually beneficial partnerships and social initiatives.

We focus our CSR engagement with the community in four areas, namely the Environment, Science Education, Water for the World and our global Borouge without Borders initiative.

Environment

Our environmental awareness initiatives span across a wide area, initiating and delivering campaigns in multiple countries to:

Encourage the responsible disposal of waste

Educate the public to reduce, reuse and recycle waste

Promote the benefits and value of polymers

Borouge participates and organises clean-ups and community awareness campaigns, and is engaging with the youth through organising youth circles, roadshows and competitions in schools and universities. These activities aim to inspire the future generation to understand the principles of sustainability and the benefits and value of polymers. At Borouge, we also engage with the community to educate and further raise awareness around sustainable waste disposal and segregation.

The Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI)

The Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) was launched by Borouge in 2013 to enhance sustainability practices across campuses in the UAE. Its goal is to strengthen and build leadership capacity amongst the Emirates’ youth to address issues of environmental sustainability and encourage them to be the main agent of change in contributing towards, and shaping, the development of sustainable communities.

The initiative, implemented by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) on behalf of Borouge, and supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, provides students with a platform to network and share ideas with their local and international counterparts on topics, like water scarcity, waste, energy, climate change and biodiversity. The SCI involves a self-audit within the campuses and a subsequent correction plan, followed by a community engagement project embedding a sustainability mindset and adoption of behaviours in local communities. As of today, 21 universities across the UAE have joined the initiative.

Project STOP – Indonesia

Project STOP is an initiative, co-founded by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ, that partners with industry players, governments and the local community to build effective and circular waste management systems to prevent the leakage of plastics into the environment and oceans, thereby helping improve resource efficiencies and public health. Project STOP establishes new solutions and models that can be rapidly scaled up by creating circular waste systems that increase the value generated from waste, while creating new jobs and other social and economic benefits for the communities.

The project has three key objectives: to achieve zero leakage of waste into the environment, increase resource efficiency and recycle more polymers, as well as create benefits for local communities. For further information, visit www.stopoceanplastics.com

Polymers On The Move

We recognise that investing in education is critical to building a sustainable industry, especially one that has a strong focus on innovation. In our efforts to inspire, encourage and empower the youth to pursue a science education, we initiated in 2016 our bespoke curriculum for students, Polymers on the Move (POTM). We partner with leading schools in the areas we operate in, aiming to encourage the students to view science as a viable field of study and career path.

The programme provides students with information on the nature of benefits of polymers in everyday life and engages them through interactive experiments covering the useful properties of polymers compared to other materials. Additionally, the students participate in a number of presentations, workshops and scientific experiments, as well as a tour at the state-of-the-art research and development Borouge Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi. The students have the opportunity to meet our scientists, engineers and technicians and learn about our advanced technologies and equipment, extensive scientific laboratories and our advanced polymer solutions, while experiencing a hands-on creative work environment. The POTM programme is now further enhanced to welcome university students too.

Borouge has since then expanded the programme to Asia, holding multiple course runs in schools in India and Singapore, engaging with hundreds of students in encouraging them to be ambassadors for a circular economy.

Water For The World

For billions of people, water and sanitation are pressing and immediate vital challenges. Since 2007, Borouge together with Borealis, proactively contribute to addressing this global challenge through our Water for the World initiative and our local water-related projects.

To maximise its benefits, Water for the World works in partnership with NGOs and the private sector, including partners and customers of Borouge and Borealis, local communities and other value chain partners, to implement these projects across the world, including India, Pakistan, Nepal, China, Ethiopia and Kenya.

Our local water-related projects:

  • Improving access to clean water and modern sanitation
  • Fostering knowledge, building partnerships and delivering sustainable polymer solutions
  • Raising awareness in communities and across the value chain for the preservation
